PROFESSIONAL MODELMAKING

This section illustrates some examples of Professional Modelmaking I have produced.

The photographs below illuatrate a Lockheed P-38J Lightning 'Viking 2' scale model that I was asked to produce for the Imperial War Museum at Duxford for Public display in the American Air Museum by Graham Thompson.

The model took approximately 3 weeks to research, plan and build. The final wingspan was 36 inches (3 feet) from tip to tip. Every part of this model was hand built due to the nature of the scale that was requested.

Detail was very important as it was to be displayed at 'waist' level in a display case. After the aircraft had been fashioned from a variety of material including resin, metals, plastics and synthetic woods, I began to cover the entire structure in Aluminium tape, cutting every panel individually to replicate the actual aircrafts skin. This leaves no room for error and it took a number of days to complete this part of the construction process.

Once the Aluminium had been applied and polished, I then set about the paint scheme, which apart from the internal features and gear bays was mainly the olive drab areas on the cockpit pod and engine inners.

After the paint was applied and allowed a few days to settle, I applied the decals that I had especially made and began finished the aircraft off with a weathered look and faded D-Day stripes as requested in the final stages of construction by the client.

The Model now resides in the American Air Museum at Duxford.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Graham Thompson and the IWM Duxford for requesting my services on this project and allowing me to exhibit the final product in their Museum.
